Something Something

In a horrible turn of events, I have songs from Aladdin stuck in my head. Selections include “Arabian Nights” (“Arabian nights/like Arabian days/something something/hotter than hot/in a lot of good ways”) and the one song where they are like all riding on the magic carpet and making out.

I feel shame. Deep, deep shame.

Do not ask me how this song got in my head. I just know that they are here, in my head, making me sad. I was even listening to something else and STILL SINGING THIS DAMN SONG in my head. It is like a medley, where I start with one and then somehow end up at the other song.

I am booing myself.

TeeVee theme songs have always been my choice to clean out other pesky tunes.

    Try such classic favorites as:

The Brady Bunch (the best one)
    Gilligan’s Island
    The Monkees
    The Flintstones

They are really effective as brain-cleaners because they were scientifically designed to make you forget about everything else and concentrate on the next half-hour’s entertainment (read: commercials).

Here, let me get you started:

Here’s the story of a lovely lady
Who was bringing up three very lovely girls.
All of them had hair of gold, like their mother,
    The youngest one in curls.

Here’s the story, of a man named Brady,
Who was busy with three boys of his own,
They were four men, living all together,
    Yet they were all alone.

‘Til the one day when the lady met this fellow
And they knew it was much more than a hunch,
That this group would somehow form a family.
That’s the way we all became the Brady Bunch!
    The Brady Bunch!
    The Brady BUnch!
That’s the way we became the Brady Bunch!

The best/worst mental tune replacer of all time is only three notes: “By…Mennen”

  3. Debora:

The theme song from “I Dream of Jeanie.” And if you “sing” it in front of your friends – then they get afflicted as well.

LilGerman: That did not work, but now I have it stuck in my head in addition to selections from Aladdin. Thanks.

    Steve: Didn’t work. :( I hate aladdin.

Debora: GAHHHHHH STOP IT EVERYONE JUST STOP YOU’RE MAKIUNG IT WORSE!

  5. Melissa:

    Embrace it! Aladdin is FUN.
    Really- so fun.

  6. pedro:

    1. Who the hell remembers Aladin’s songs??? I am trying really hard and I cannot remember anything from those cartoons/movies whatever

    2. Who thought it was a good idea to replace an insistent stupid song in one’s head with another stupid song? In the best case you forget the first one, but you are stuck with the next one.

  7. Ramon:

Go deeper, sing peabo bryson’s “whole new world” duet!! :)

  8. Ms. Bizarro:

You are an unfortunate victim of a Song Fu master, my friend. The only antidote I know to battle a Song Fu attack is the old Honeycomb cereal commercial tune:

“Honeycomb’s big – yeah yeah yeah!
It’s not small – no no no!”

  9. Mr. Pony:

An alternative to finding a replacement or cleanser is actually listening to the offending song itself. I admit though; this is a bit of an extreme case. Proceed with caution.

  10. Aura:

I like Pony’s idea. Also, you should do some sort of interpretive dance while listening. Also, maybe get a couple of those long flowy ribbons attached to sticks the gymnastsics girls used in their floor routines in sixth grade? I think also Will Ferrell uses them in Old School? I know you’ve got some of those tucked away somewhere in that shoebox of yours.

  11. Bryan:

I used to purchse the cd’s of songs that got lodged in my head, which explains why my music collection could best be described as 400 cases of crap. Thank god for itunes, rhapsody, lastfm, etc. Just be happy you don’t have the theme song from “Titanic” stuck in your head…so painful.

  12. jon:

Just hope this is not a spector of things to come…a stuck in you head musical tribute to all childrens movie classics. Fasten your bib and diapers Annie, it could be a bumpy ride.

  13. annie:

    Melissa: It’s catchy like herpes.

Pedro: 1. Apparently I do and I am ashamed. I didn’t realize it was from Aladdin. I just started humming and I was like wtf am I humming. OMG ALADDIN??? It went down like that.

Ramon: That is an awful song.

Ms. Biz: Oh man I LOVED that song. It doesn’t even MAKE SENSE. They were just regular sized cereal.

Pony: Do you have Aladdin on CD? No? Well here is what I’m going to tell you: I am not buying that shit.

Aura: Why are you reading this? Finish your thesis, then we’ll talk.

Bryan: Oh man, at least with mp3s you can hide them from people. W/ CDs you are just showing to the world all your crap.

Jon: It’s bad, the whole thing is bad.

  14. Mr. Pony:

Anybody else have one of these damned songs stuck in their heads now? A Whole New World, indeed. I’ll get you for this, Choi.

  15. Lynsey Peterson:

    More often than not
    Are hotter than hot
In a lot of good wa-ays.

    :)

  16. lilgerman:

Steve…excellent suggestion, and it easily fits in your wallet.

  17. Queenie:

You are a horrible person! I always get that freaking song in my head! Now it’s back! Back to the Betty Ford clinic of bad songs!!! I hate you like canned peas! Arrrrraaaabian niiiiiiights…dammit!

    Istanbul not constantinople
been a long time gone since constantinople
why did constantinople get the works?
that’s nobody’s business but the Turrrrrks.

    Phew

  18. annie:

Lynsey: See now I’m singing it without the something something part. Ugh. EVERYONE YOU ARE NOT HELPING ME.

Queenie: Dude, this song has been stuck in my head for over a fucking WEEK!!!!!

  19. Dave:

Late to the party, here I come to save the day.

She’s a small wonder, pretty and bright with soft curls.

She’s a small wonder, a girl unlike unlike other girls.

    She’s a miracle, and I grant you
She’ll enchant you at her sight.

She’s a small wonder, and she’ll make your heart take flight.
